Bill entered the footplate grades on the 20.11.1959 at Brighton.
Bill later transferred to Three Bridges M.T and with the closure of Three Bridges M.T. Bill transferred to addiscombe, Selhurst and finally back to Brighton M.T.
Bill held many positions within the Brighton Branches. Bill was L.D.C. Secretary from 1970 to 1988 and from 1988 to 1993. Brighton No.1 Branch Chairman from 1972 to 1988 and from 1988 to 1993.
In 1993 Bill was elected onto the Excecutive Commitee. Bill was later to become President of the E.C. a position he held for 5 years.

Brian entered the footplate grade at Brighton loco on the 05.12.1955. Brian spent his entire railway career at Brighton loco & E.M.U.T.


John Osborne receiving his retirement certificate.
John entered the footplate grade at Brighton loco on the 11.05.1959. John spent his entire railway career at Brighton loco/M.T. In 1989 John was elected onto the L.D.C. after many years as a Co-Opted member of the L.D.C. for Brighton M.T. John retain his position on the L.D.C. up until ill health forced him into early retirement.

Barry entered the footplate grade at Brighton loco on the 10.08.1959. Barry worked at Brighton & Three Bridges loco/M.T. depots


Chris Newton receiving his retirement certificate.
Chris started the footplate grade at Old Oak Common loco on the 16.04.1962. Chris qualified for driving in 1967 and got his appointment to driver in 1969. Chris later transferred to Streatham Hill E.M.U.T. in 1970. In 1972 Chris transferred to London Victoria "Central" E.M.U.T. and finally moved to Brighton E.M.U.T. in 1974
In 1988 Chris become the first branch secretary of the newly amalgamated branch, a position he held until 2000. Chris also served as ASLEF L.D.C. & H&S Rep up until he took early retirement in 2008.

Ralph entered the footplate grade at Brighton loco on the 07.01.1963. Ralph spent his entire railway career at Brighton loco/M.T.


Bob "Jet Lag" Attwood receiving his retirement certificate.
Bob joined the footplate grade at Hither Green loco on the 17.01.1963. Bob was also a driver at Dorking (Western) Waterloo prior coming to Brighton M.T. in the early 1990's.

Thank you so much for your letter of July 20 and the cheque. What a wonderful surprise! Robert and I would like you all to know how much we appreciate your kindness at this time. The money will be most useful. I am hoping to purchase a leg/arm exercise machine (motorized) to help improve his circulation and muscle power. All disability equipment seems to be rather expensive so as you can imagine your gift is wonderful for us.

Bill "Spike" Jones receiving his retirement certificate.
Spike first entered the footplate grade at Brighton loco in C1959 and later transfered to Three Bridges loco. In 1964 Spike left the railway and re-entered the footplate grades at Three Bridges M.T. on the 31.10.1966. Spike moved to Addiscombe E.M.U.T. to seek his promotion to driver in 1969. This was due to the clousure of Three Bridges M.T. in April 1969. In the mid 1970's transferred to Brighton E.M.U.T.

Dave entered the footplate grade onthe 03.10.1988. Dave had previously been a freight/passenger guard and sort promotion to the footplate in line with the new Train Crew Agreement. Dave first went to Norwood M.T. to seek his promotion and in C1994 transferred back to Brighton. In October 1997 Dave move to the newly open Thameslink depot and become the first Company Council rep for the T.L. South.

Mick entered the footplate grade on the 11.11.1957. at Brighton loco. Mick transferred to Selhurst E.M.U.T. to seek promotion to driver, later transferred back to Brighton M.T. Mick served as a member of Brighton M.T. ASLEF L.D.C. Rep since the early 1970's. and held the position of Branch Chairman. With the introduction of a H&S rep in 1974 Mick become the first ASLEF H&S rep., a posion he held up until he retired under ill health in C1999.

TONY ALLEN RETIREMENT PRESENTATION 12th AUGUST 1996

Tony Allen started on the footplate in C1961 at Salisbury.Tony will best remembered as a driver at Tunbridge Wells West. With the closure of the "THE WELLS" in May 1985, Tony moved to Seaford E.M.U.T. via Redhill M.T. as a redundant driver. With the closure of Seaford depot in February 1994, Tony transferred to Brighton as a redundant driver. Tony remained at Brighton until his retirement.
Through out his career, Tony was an active A.S.L.E.F. member and held various A.S.L.E.F. positions within the Branch or as a local level representive. Tony was on the Southern Region Sectional Council "B" prior to the disbanding of Sectional Councils. With formation of the South Central Driver's D.F.C. Tony served in this position until his early retirement through ill health retirement.

For many years retiring A.S.L.E.F. members recieved their retirement certificates at this event. The Brighton Train Crew Social Fund was helped to be set up with funds from the A.S.L.E.F. Social fund.
